Description:

The electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance enables the simultaneous performance of electrochemical and piezoelectric microgravimetry investigations of layers undergoing electrochemical processes that are accompanied by a transfer of mass through the electrode-solution interphase. Quartz resonators with a lower resonance frequency, i.e. 5 MHz, characterized by higher maximum mass load at the cost of lower sensitivity and detection, are used in systems composed of many monolayers, whereas for monomolecular layer studies - higher frequency resonators, i.e. 10 MHz are used which exhibit a four times greater sensitivity and detection at the cost of a four times lower maximum load. The EQCM 5410 and EQCM 5710 are used for static measurements and the EQCM 5610 for detection in analytical flow techniques such as FIA and HPLC with columns not exceeding 1 mm in diameter. The unique feature of the EQCM 5710 microbalance is the simultaneous measurement of current at a controlled potential (i.e. under voltammetric or chronoamperometric conditions) and frequency changes (corresponding to changes in layer viscosity) that accompany the electrochemical process with transfer of mass through the electrode - (electrolyte solution) interphase.
