Research Topics: We study the optical and spectroscopic properties of nanostructures and nanomaterials and their interactions with molecules. By developing advanced spectroscopic and microscopic methods - especially ultra-sensitive single-molecule techniques - we aim to uncover the mechanisms governing these nanosystems and translate this understanding into photoactive materials for ultrasensitive detection, photoelectronics, and photochemistry.

The members of the group have expertise in the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors, ion-transfer voltammetry at the interface of two immiscible solutions (ITIES), low-cost systems including paper-based devices, microfluidics, electronic tongues, and multivariate data analysis.

- Abstract:
In the talk recent experimental studies on the photophysics and ultrafast dynamics of biological photoreceptors will be presented, with emphasis on retinal-based and carotenoid-containing systems as well as emerging investigations of molecular mechanisms relevant to magnetoreception. Using advanced time-resolved spectroscopic techniques, including femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy and complementary transient optical methods, the work explores how chromophore structure, protonation state, and local environment influence excited-state evolution and photochemical pathways.
Biogram: Dr. Miroslav Kloz is an experimental scientist working at the intersection of molecular biophysics, photochemistry, and ultrafast spectroscopy. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in biophysics from the University of South Bohemia. His early work included interferometric measurements of heat dissipation in photosynthesis, followed by a Master’s thesis focused on energy transfer in the chlorophyll–peridinin protein complex. He subsequently obtained his PhD from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where his research centered on femtosecond vibrational spectroscopy of carotenoids and the development of frequency-modulated stimulated Raman spectroscopy.
His research focuses on the excited-state dynamics of biologically relevant chromophores, particularly retinal proteins and carotenoids, using advanced laser-based techniques such as femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy and related ultrafast methods. He is interested in how molecular structure, protonation state, and local environment shape ultrafast processes including energy transfer, protonation dynamics, and photochemical reactivity.

A fascination with organic reaction mechanisms and reactive intermediates began early, during school years close to home. Pursuing this curiosity led step by step away from home — first to nearby cities, then to Germany, and eventually to Poland.
This journey shaped both scientific direction and personal growth. While the path has had its challenges, the interest in writing reaction mechanisms and exploring transient intermediates has remained a constant source of motivation. The talk reflects on how this long-standing curiosity, supported by different research environments, continues to guide work in chemistry and has found a meaningful context in Poland.

- Abstract:
Night-migratory songbirds navigate over thousands of kilometers using celestial cues and the Earth’s magnetic field. In this seminar, Prof. Karin Dedek will present new insights into the cellular circuitry of the songbird retina and discuss how retinal organization may support both visual processing and magnetoreception. She will highlight key adaptations, including the anoxia tolerance of the inner retina and the structure and connectivity of double-cone photoreceptors (PR5/PR6). The talk will conclude with hypotheses on how horizontal-cell pathways could contribute to magnetically relevant retinal signaling.

This practical seminar shows how to use NDAs to collaborate faster and safer — what a well-structured NDA should contain, which clauses are worth negotiating, and which typically aren’t. We’ll cover the essentials: defining confidential information, liability, permitted disclosures, duration, and return or destruction of materials, aligned with international market standards and real deal practice.
