Offer no. 43/11

Method for fabrication of 2D net-like patterns of nanoparticles on solid substrates and surface covered by this method

  • Summary:

    The invention comprises the method of covering a solid surface with a two-dimensional network of nanoparticles, wherein the mixture of the nanoparticle solution and a liquid crystalline (LC) compound is drop-casted onto the water surface, and subsequently the obtained film is transferred onto a solid surface using the Langmuir-Blodgett method. It is characteristic that the LC compound belongs to the group of cyanobiphenyls. The invention also includes the solid surface covered with such a 2D nanoparticle network.

  • Advantages / Innovative aspects:
    • The method allows for fabrication of a two-dimensional network of metallic nanoparticles stabilized with an organic ligand;
    • Such a network is formed on the water Surface and can be transferred to a solid substrate, where it remains stable over time;
    • By proper adjustment of the nanoparticle/LC mixture and surface pressure during the compression of the film on the water surface, it is possible to precisely control the mesh size of the resulting network
    • Analogous networks can be fabricated with no compression, providing that proper mixture composition is kept and the incubation period is long enough
  • Keywords:
    nanoparticles, gold, liquid crystals, two-dimensional network, surface patterning
  • Field:
  • Usage:
    • Precisely controlled fabrication of two-dimensional structures of nanoparticles on the water surface as well as on a solid substrate
    • The obtained networks may be used as substrate for controlled growth of gallium nitride nanowires
    • As a first step in fabrication of substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)
    • Potential use of the nanoparticle networks in nanoelectronics
