CONTROLLING REGIOSELECTIVITY OF CATALYTIC TRANSFER HYDROFUNCTIONALIZATION REACTIONS BY NON-COVALENT INTERACTIONS” SONATA 16 no. 2020/39/D/ST4/01152, 14/2025

Project leader

Dawid Lichosyt

Description

The main goal of the project is to explore controlling the regioselectivity of transfer hydrofunctionalizations of alkenes and alkynes by non-covalent interactions. Such processes utilize the concept of “forward” shuttle catalysis, which represents a new, potentially powerful strategy for organic synthesis. However, the current synthetic applications of these methods are significantly limited due to the formation of a mixture of regioisomeric products. Therefore, the target isomer is typically formed in low yield and its isolation is problematic. To address this issue, we postulate that new classes of precisely designed supramolecular catalysts (SupraCats) will selectively promote the formation of one target regioisomer. Such catalysts will exploit additional non-covalent interactions to preorganize a substrate at the metal center to favor the formation of the target product. Therefore, the strategy will precisely control the selectivity of reactions that are not conducted selectively with current methods. Consequently, this approach will provide access to a broad range of chemicals (e.g., nitriles, aldehydes, halides), the selective formation of which is currently limited but desired for both the development and production of fine chemicals and materials. For our recent study addressing the regioselectivity issue in the hydrocyanation of internal alkynes, see our article in Angewandte Chemie (https://doi.org/10.1002/anie.202500940).
