Project description

Project title, type and project number

Project title “A Coherent Analysis Framework for Emergence in Biological Systems”. Project no 101226762.

Project leader

Lead Supervisor Prof. Anna Maciołek (Institute of Physical Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences)

Description

Growth of cells in viscoelastic medium

Objectives

Typically, the complex environments in which living systems reside are viscoelastic fluids. For example, the extracellular matrix comprises cross-linked, semiflexible polymeric filaments that respond sensitively to even small stresses generated by cells. This in turn relates to many aspects of cellular function, from cell spreading and division to tissue development. The mechanical feedback between a cell or cell colony and the viscoelastic environment can lead to interesting self-organisation processes that result in the emergent patterns. The objective of this project is to explore this feedback loop of viscoelasticity of environment on the growing cell and cell colonies. The emphasis is on the nonlinear responses of the viscoelastic medium, which, compared to the linear regime, can significantly change the strains and stresses generated by growing cells in a long-range manner. This may also be relevant for interactions of cells in nonlinear biopolymer media.

Key responsibilities include

  • Participation in developing concepts and tools  to realize the aims of the project. Specifically, for the first goal of the project it will be theoretical and numerical  determination of the aggregation phenomena for the mixture of two types of colloids differing in size suspended in the binary liquid mixture near its critical point. Based on the obtained theoretical results designing colloidal alloys finely tunable by fluctuation-induced forces. Exploring the impact of nonequilibrium conditions.
  • Scientific initiative and contribution through regular reporting and publishing, as well as presenting at network meetings and workshops, national and international conferences;

Requirements

Candidates are eligible to apply for CAFE-BIO positions if they have (or expect to have by September 2026) an excellent first degree that qualifies for PhD study in physics, mathematics and adjacent fields, with preferably a strong background in statistical physics.

Candidates with a degree in the biological sciences with strong quantitative skills are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates must not be in possession of a doctoral degree (PhD) at the date of recruitment.

Candidates can be of any nationality.

At the time of recruitment no candidate may have resided or carried out their main activity (work, study etc.) in the country of the eventual host institution for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

CAFE-BIO aims to promote gender equality. Suitably qualified female candidates, and candidates from any other under-represented group, are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply.

Key assessment criteria

The committee will consider the following criteria:

  • Competence to carry out specific tasks in the research project
  • Previous scientific achievements
  • Fluency in English
Required documents

Complete application should include the following documents:

  • Scientific CV including names and contact details of potential referees)
  • Letter of motivation;
  • Digital copies or scans of all certificates/transcripts (e.g. school-leaving certificates/qualification for university entrance, vocational training certificates, diplomas, Bachelor & Master degree certificates)

Recruitment procedure

How to apply

Before applying, candidates should consult the full list of the 15 CAFE-BIO research projects. https://cafe-bio.org/projects

Any queries on the projects themselves should be sent directly to the contact email given in the PhD project description.

Candidates are requested to apply for three PhD research projects that they are eligible for, in ranked order of preference, in a single application.

An application be started by clicking the Apply now link available on each of the PhD project pages. Please only submit a single application.

You will be asked to fill out a web form with basic information and you will also need to upload a single PDF containing the following information:

Letter of motivation: describe your academic background and why you are applying to CAFE-BIO, including the reasons for your project preferences.

Scientific CV including names and contact details of potential referees.

Digital copies or scans of all certificates/transcripts (e.g. school-leaving certificates/qualification for university entrance, vocational training certificates, diplomas, Bachelor & Master degree certificates)

Proof of previous employment where applicable (e.g. certificates of employment, work slips, references)

(Except for native speakers) Evidence of English language skills (e.g. Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency, IELTS Academic, TOEFL-iBT/PBT, UNIcert, evidence of successful completion of a course of studies in English or of at least two years of study or work in an English-speaking country)

Project preferences will be considered when allocating projects to candidates, in combination with a ranking based on the Letter of Motivation and Scientific CV, and performance at interview for shortlisted candidates.

Additional information

CAFE-BIO is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network funded by the European Union where 15 Doctoral Candidates will conduct PhD research projects in pursuit of a Coherent Analysis Framework for Emergence in Biological systems. Doctoral Candidates will, through these research and other training activities, gain a rigorous grounding in solving with complex problems in the context of emergence in biological systems, combining approaches from many scientific traditions.
