Key responsibilities include

The person employed as an Assistant Professor will be responsible for leading Research Group No. 11, “Advanced transport phenomena” at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, and for developing its scientific programme and computational methods in the area of physical phenomena, in particular transport processes occurring in complex systems such as porous media, electrokinetic systems, and biological systems.

Requirements

  • A university degree in chemistry, together with a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in chemical sciences, in the discipline of chemistry;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and research experience in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrokinetics, transport processes in porous media, conservation laws, and numerical methods, as evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals;
  • At least two research stays at foreign research institutions different from the institution where the doctoral degree was obtained, including one lasting more than eighteen months;
  • Documented experience in leading a research team;
  • Experience in leading a research project awarded through a competitive process within the last 5 years prior to the date of this call for applications. This period may be extended by the duration of any long-term (over 90 days) documented sick leave or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work. In addition, this period may be extended by the number of months spent on leave for the care and upbringing of children, granted in accordance with the provisions of the Labour Code, and in the case of women – for example, by 18 months for each child born or adopted, if this method of accounting for breaks in the research career is more favourable to the female candidate;
  • Documented experience in conducting research projects in cooperation with industrial partners;
  • Documented experience in designing and developing open-source numerical libraries for scientific computing;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written.

  • Application of scientific achievements: the number of developed open-source numerical libraries for scientific computing, their scientific excellence and usefulness;
  • Career mobility: research stays;
  • Experience in conducting research projects: the number and financial value of projects and grants obtained through competitive calls;
  • Experience in cooperation with industry: the number and financial value of projects carried out in cooperation with industrial partners;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Opinion on the candidate provided by a scientist who is a recognised expert in the field.
Required documents
  • CV (including contact details, i.e. postal address or email address and telephone number);
  • Cover letter, not exceeding 3,000 characters, presenting the candidate’s vision for the scientific research and the topics to be pursued by an independent research group;
  • At least one opinion on the candidate provided by a scientist who is a recognised expert in the field;
  • List of publications, highlighting the 3 most important achievements, each described in no more than 500 characters;
  • List of projects divided into two parts: i) scientific projects and ii) scientific-industrial projects carried out in cooperation with an industrial partner, in which the candidate acted as principal investigator or main contractor, together with a summary of each project and information on the results obtained, in no more than 500 characters;
  • Candidate’s declaration that they have read the regulations for conducting competitions for scientific positions at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences;
  • A letter of recommendation issued by a researcher who is a recognized expert in the field of chemistry.

When assessing the candidate's achievements the Competition Committee will take into account breaks in research work (e.g. maternity leave, internships in industry etc.) and will convert the indicated achievements of the candidate into effective years of research .

As part of the competition procedure, selected Candidates may be invited for an interview or be asked to publicly present the results of their previous work in the form of a seminar at the IPC PAS and / or additional explanations.

Candidates who have been issued a negative opinion by the Competition Committee or candidates not selected for employment have the right to appeal against the results of the evaluation. The appeal shall be lodged with the Director of the Institute within 7 days from the date of receipt of the appropriate information. The decision of the Director of the Institute shall be final.
