| ETHICAL GUIDELINES FOR Ph.D. STUDENTS |
- Safety training
1.1 Ph.D. students must complete a safety training program offered by the Institute. Students must observe safety rules and regulations during their research work. When in doubt, students are expected to seek help and additional instructions from their supervisors and/or the Institute Safety Officer.
1.2 Ph.D. students doing their research in the evenings and/or on weekends must observe strict safety practices. They should preferably work with a fellow Ph.D. student in the same lab or an adjacent lab. No afterhour work is allowed without the permission of a supervisor. In case of accident, the student should seek aid of another student or call the Emergency Squad at 999, Fire Squad at 998, or Police at 997.
- Teaching responsibilities
Ph.D. students are expected to exercise their teaching responsibilities as teaching assistants with diligence, competence and utmost seriousness. They should be responsive to comments of undergraduate and freshman students that they teach and seek input from the class at the end of the semester.
- Scientific code of conduct
Ph.D. students should perform their research and pursue their Ph.D. studies with honesty, integrity and diligence. Students engaged in unethical practices while conducting their research and/or their course work are initially subject to loss of their financial support and then, dismissal from the Ph.D. program. For the purposes of the present guidelines, "unethical practices", i.e., "misconduct in research" is defined as fabrication or falsification of data or results, plagiarism, or other practices that seriously deviate from those commonly accepted by the scientific community for proposing, conducting or reporting research. The research performed by the Ph.D. student is considered confidential unless approved by a supervisor for public presentation. Allegations regarding misconduct in research are submitted in writing by the supervisor to the Ph.D. Program Coordinator for further action.
- Ownership of research data and materials
Ph.D. students are requested to record their research results and data systematically and adequately in their laboratory notebooks. Indication of a date on which the results were obtained is a must. The laboratory notebooks, typically provided by the supervisor, and instrument printouts of the results, are the sole property of the Institute. However, students may copy, at their own expense, portions or all of their results and instrument printouts for preparation of their dissertations. Laboratory notebooks cannot be taken away from the laboratory without the permission of the supervisor. The content of the laboratory notebook is confidential, unless released by the supervisor. Computer assisted storage of data and results is subject to the same rules.
- Dissemination of research results: publication and presentation at scientific meetings
5.1 Authorship and co-authorship. The supervisor is solely responsible for assigning credit, determining the order in which names of authors are to appear in the manuscript and approving the final version of the manuscript. Any dispute is to be resolved with the help of the Ph.D. Program Coordinator.
5.2 Interpretation of results. Discussion and interpretation of results is a joint effort of a supervisor and a student. However, the supervisor is responsible for the final interpretation of the results. Any dispute is to be resolved with the help of the Ph.D. Program Coordinator.
5.3 Acknowledgments. It is the sole responsibility of the supervisor to acknowledge other individuals' help in research and/or preparation of the publication or presentation as well as institutions' financial support of the research. Any dispute is to be resolved with the help of the Ph.D. Program Coordinator.
Acknowledgment statement in dissertation
Customarily, students may acknowledge individuals for assistance received during their studies. However, no inflammatory statements, sarcasm or adverse criticism of a person or institution is allowed.
Resolution of disputes
Ph.D. students are required to resolve disagreements or disputes in an amicable way. Any grievance is to be submitted in writing to the Ph.D. Program Coordinator. All parties involved in the dispute should maintain strict confidentiality.
I have read and understood the guidelines presented above.
